BECSR 2016 in London With DDTC

Presenting a thought in an international forum is a dream for university students. The same applies for us, Arum Puspita Prihandika and Yofi Rosameliana, university students majoring in Accounting FEB UI who are now in our 5th seminar. Our dream to participate in a conference has been present since our first year as university students and it was fulfilled this year.

A forwarded message giving information on conferences had us interested in an event titled “2016 LONDON International Conference on Business, Economics, and Corporate Social Responsibilities (BECSR-16)”. We later started discussing the ideas relevant to the conference theme. Our interest in tax and the rising phenomenon of online shopping drove us to finish a paper titled “The Growth of Online Shop and Endorsement at Social Media Support Tax Avoidance: Indonesia Case”.

In the first stage, we proposed the abstract of the paper. Having waited for a few days, we received an email informing us that our abstract had been accepted and we were invited to give a presentation. Both excitement and hesitance overwhelmed us. We were excited as we had the chance to go to the UK. We were hesitant on the other hand as the cost to participate in the event was quite high. Due to the limitation, we attempted to search for funding help, from the campus and outside the campus.

This was the hardest phase we had to go through, as funding was an extremely fundamental matter to ensure our participation in BECSR-16. We tried to ask our working seniors for help, especially at companies related to the theme of our paper. Hope came from Arum’s senior. She introduced Arum to Kak Nurlita, her friend at university who is now working at Danny Darussalam Tax Center (DDTC). As advised by Kak Nurlita, we proposed sponsorship cooperation to DDTC.

We received a phone call from DDTC’s Senior Partner DDTC, Pak Danny Septriadi, and were invited to the office. Upon the explanation of the contents of our paper, he was willing to assist us in revising our paper. He even provided us with free tickets to attend a seminar titled “Taxation of Digital Economy and E-Commerce”, which was closely related to the theme of our paper. Pak Danny acknowledged our determination and accepted our sponsorship cooperation proposal. We could finally breathe as we got the assurance to leave for the UK. We also met with Pak Darussalam who gave us the opportunity and numerous inputs and encouragement related to this event.

The event was opened by Prof. Dr. P. S. Sandhu from Rayat-Bahra University, India, a representative from Eminent Association of Pioneers (EAP). It was later continued with a keynote speech from Prof. Christos C. Frangos and Dr. Saba Yunus. Afterwards, each participants of BECSR-16 presented their paper along with question and answer session. We were number 13 in the queue for presentation. We tried to eliminate our nervousness to speak in front of academicians and practioners.

Having attended the entire events in BECSR-16, we still had two days to explore London. We returned to Indonesia on Sunday, 4 December 2016. We gained so many lessons from this trip. Moreover, this is our first time abroad. New knowledge, new experience, new people, new places, the time when we organised our departure in Indonesia or when we arrived in the UK will always be unforgettable memories. Thank you Pak Darussalam and Pak Danny. DDTC is Great!
